Holiday in Latvia: the fairytale Vippi holiday home by the Salatsi River

You'll drive along quiet Latvian forest roads with centuries-old trees leaning over you, until you reach the heart of the Salatsi river valley. Here, amidst the music of nature and the play of shadows of light, a special rest house awaits you, a sanctuary of both tranquillity and Scandinavian design craftsmanship, a place to take time out and recover from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This place is an invitation to reconnect. With the earth. With design. With yourself.

House with a touch of history

The echoes of a long past live on in this fishing lodge, built in 1876 and once a holiday retreat for travellers. The old building was threatened with demolition when Latvian architect Artus Martinsons saw the potential to continue to offer travellers a place to stay, but with a contemporary design that paid homage to nature, history and modern design.

One by one, the hut was dismantled, numbered and rebuilt on a 17-hectare plot of land, where you'll find pristine forests, a fast-flowing river and enchanting meadows. Suitable for those seeking peace and inspiration, the restored holiday home is a tribute to nature, history and Scandinavian design.

To switch off from the designed world

The traces of the former fisherman's cottage have been preserved: impressive log walls and old wooden beams take you back in time. Together with the modernity of its existence, the building adds a touch of sophistication. However, small changes have been made to the holiday home in the form of the removal of ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, which make the building lighter and airier. A cosy fireplace nook, modern furnishings, handicraft details and large glass doors create a pleasant atmosphere where it is ideal to simply relax.

Soft furnishings such as the VIPP466 recliner with VIPP467 footstool bring comfort to Vipp living spaces. In addition, the Vipp loft modular sofa, the VIPP655 pouffe and the VIPP423-VIPP425 sofa chairs. Dining is at the VIPP494 round table, seated on VIPP481 chairs. A paper pendant light VIPP586 is placed above the table for a crown.

Love goes through the kitchen

On the ground floor there is an open-plan kitchen-living room, where the solid black Vipp V1 kitchen harmonises with the old wood.

The Vipp kitchen is built for a lifetime of everyday use, with durable powder-coated steel cabinets and a stainless steel worktop.

When creating the kitchen, Vipp thought of it as a building block, hence its modularity, with five modules that allow the user to choose the layout that suits their needs. In addition, there is a choice of three lightly textured matt colours: black, white and warm grey.

Here you can prepare dishes from mushrooms harvested from the forest around the house, fish from the Salatsi River or other local produce.

Designed for a sweet rest

One double bedroom is on the ground floor. A double bedroom with a king-size bed is on the lofty second floor. The VIPP452 green leather chair with sliding swivel base, the VIPP591 sculpture lamps, the VIPP521 table lamp, the VIPP421 table and the VIPP655 pouffe have been selected from the refined Vipp collection. The bed is from furniture company Gervason, partner of Novel Design, model Ghost.

Under the pent roof on the top floor you will also find an eye-catching bathtub designed by Patricia Urquiola from Italian bathroom brand Agape, who is also one of Novel Design's partners.

A multifaceted idyll

Every season at Vipp's Salads offers something special - whether it's summer swimming, salmon fishing, kayaking or canoeing, swimming in a hammock, picking wild produce, cycling or relaxing in a hot tub. Or a winter cross-country skiing trip or a trekking tour in the thick snow.

However, there's always a cosy and warm home waiting for you in your mother's house.
